On March 22, 2019, Henri P. Gaboriau, MD, FACS, represented Massena Memorial Hospital and spoke about skin cancer at the Wellness Expo at Massena Central School. During his session, Dr. Gaboriau covered topics of skin cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options. He shared facts and statistics regarding the different types of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma, as well as mortality rates associated with each. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States when you consider all three types. This is why it is so important for people to take precautions to lower their risk of developing skin cancer.
According to Dr. Gaboriau, people can protect themselves by using sunscreens with SPF 30 and up even when it is cloudy outside, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, reapplying sunscreen when being active and perspiring, regularly checking moles for any changes, and visiting a healthcare provider for yearly examinations.
