In honor of Hernia Awareness Month, Massena Memorial Hospital would like to remind the community that free Hernia Screening Clinics are held at the hospital each month. A hernia is a condition where a person has part of their organ protruding through an opening in the surrounding muscle wall. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that roughly five million Americans have a hernia; however, many go without treatment. Only 750,000 Americans with hernias seek care from a health professional each year.
Hernias can affect persons of all ages, and there are several types. An inguinal hernia is located in the groin, while an umbilical hernia is found around the belly button. A person with an incisional hernia has a part of their organ poking through a scar. Another type of hernia is a hiatal hernia, which is when a person develops a hole in their diaphragm and the upper part of their stomach pushes through that opening. MMH’s General Surgeons, Dalkeith Facey, DO, and Sanjay Shah, MD, are committed to helping patients discover if they might be suffering from one of these types of hernias and perform the free screenings during MMH’s monthly clinics.
If left untreated, hernias can cause a person unnecessary pain or lead to further health problems. Dr. Facey and Dr. Shah are both Board-Certified and can help individuals avoid these problems through their ability to perform inguinal and umbilical hernia repair surgeries.
MMH’s upcoming Hernia Screening Clinics will be held on July 2, 2019 and August 6, 2019, and a full list of dates is available through the calendar on the hospital’s website. To make an appointment for the next clinic, please call (315)769-4656.
