Each year, healthcare facilities are inspected to ensure that patients are receiving quality care. One inspection that takes place annually is the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) inspection. Massena Memorial Hospital is proud to announce that the hospital received a “No Findings Inspection” during their MQSA inspection this past December, which is the top rating a facility can earn.

The hospital’s Medical Imaging Director, Robert Elsner, said, “This achievement is the result of a passionate team of professionals dedicated on a daily basis to ensure the highest quality standards. I am even more proud that this same team has accomplished this achievement for 10-years running from 2008 through 2018.” Terence Schumpert, MD, Radiologist, said, “We have an excellent mammography team and mammography services for the community in keeping with what we have done well for years. Our team passed the MQSA inspection with flying colors.”

Mammography Quality Standards Act inspections started in 1995 just a few years after the enactment of this law. Since that year, the Food and Drug Administration has employed MQSA certified inspectors who visit healthcare organizations across the nation to determine whether or not the facilities’ mammography programs are in compliance with MQSA quality standards. According to Elsner, “The MQSA inspection process is quite detailed and reviews all aspects of a quality mammography program to include, but not limited to- personnel training, qualifications and competency, equipment performance and maintenance, quality controls and testing, image quality, completeness and accuracy of reports, patient safety, and polices/procedures.”

According to the report MMH received, the MQSA certified inspector did not observe any violations of the MQSA quality standards, which is why the mammography program earned the highest rating possible. Furthermore, MMH is accredited by the American College of Radiology. Members of the mammography team at MMH include Jennifer Desilva, RT(R)(M), Paula Reynolds, RT(R)(M), Kathy Mason, RN, Sue Hummel, RN, and Terence Schumpert, MD, Radiologist. This inspection rating and accreditation show that this team is dedicated to providing the best services to MMH patients. Elsner said, “Our patients and healthcare providers can feel confident that the mammography services at MMH are of the highest quality, safe, and of great value to our community.”
