Wednesday, March 6, 2019 was an exciting day for Massena Memorial Hospital, as the organization celebrated Employee Appreciation Day. Pat Facteau, MMH’s CEO, said, “What a fun day at MMH! It was great to see so many smiles, so much green and such great spirit.” The MMH Foundation planned the appreciation day and received several donations from sponsors to make it a great success. Artwork was created by students at St. Lawrence Central School and hung all throughout the hospital for employees to see and be reminded of all the hard work they do. MMH also offered treats and discounts to their employees, as well as brought in a local fitness center, Heart to Heart, to provide staff members with a fun break during their shifts.
When asked about their reason behind MMH’s Appreciation Day, MMH’s Foundation Director, Julia Rose stated, “The Foundation knows Massena Memorial Hospital provides outstanding, vital healthcare for our community as a full-service hospital. Our mission for 33 years has been to support the same. Our hospital employees’ focus has been steadfast providing excellent care for those seeking in-patient and outpatient healthcare services at MMH. The Foundation shares that focus and recognizes the professionalism in which every team member delivers daily for our community and felt they should know that in a very public way.”
To kick off the day, MMH had donuts and coffee available to employees in the cafeteria. Tim Horton’s in Massena and Heart to Heart Fitness in Hogansburg were very generous and gave the hospital over 30 dozens of donuts. Sue Bellor was kind enough to provide the coffee. Charles Gijanto, Julie Zyzik, Corporate Compliance Officer, Miriam Catapano, MMH Foundation President, and Chelsea Donovan, Public Relations Intern, also went around to all of the hospital’s off-campus clinics to deliver donuts and make sure every one of MMH’s team members were a part of the celebration.
While at MMH’s off-campus facilities, Gijanto, Zyzik and Catapano also awarded t-shirts to exemplary employees, which said “Community minded… Just like you” on the front. The hospital’s public relations department asked for nominations from department directors, practice managers and patients so the hospital could recognize employees who are doing an outstanding job and proving what it means to truly be community minded, which is MMH’s new campaign.
T-shirts were awarded to employees at the hospital as well. The following employees received a t-shirt on MMH Appreciation Day: Marlyn Berry, Terri Carr, Shari Gilman, Dr. Rohit Barreto, Mary Mittiga, Dr. Matthew Prionas, Dr. Jayant Jhaveri, Amy Batten, Scott Weaver, Kaneta Cameron, Missy Bender, Karen Carney, Betty Smith, Matt Hayes, Ashley Snyder, Gina Chase, Gina Bain, Jen Francis, Valerie Skomsky, Clyde Leffler, Corey Fraser, Jackie Butterfield, Erin Tassie, Heather Gardner, Jon Catten, Dr. Jeffrey Greenberg, Tom Marlowe, Lisa Pastomerlo, Sue Decker, Jen Benware, Ethan Marlof, Tracey Trimm, Brittany Foote, Sam Gladle and Cody Woodworth.
Random prize drawings were also held throughout the day at MMH. The hospital gave away flowers, maple syrup, lawn chairs, lunch totes, an oil change gift certificate from Frenchie’s Chevrolet, a gift card to An Italian Affair and a Visa Gift Card. The MMH Foundation, Uniform Professionals, Bob and Cindy Elsner, Real “Frenchie” Coupal, and an anonymous donor all made the employee prize drawings possible. Heart to Heart fitness also handed out free week membership coupons and led stretching exercises during the day as a fun activity for employees.
Other treats were available to MMH employees and patients on Appreciation Day , including popcorn cups and cotton candy. The MMH Auxiliary, MMH Foundation and Bob and Cindy Elsner provided the popcorn cups and cotton candy. Several members from the community volunteered to man the popcorn and cotton candy stations throughout the day, including Massena Mayor Tim Currier, Real Coupal, Sheri Norman, Mike McCabe, Mark Bogdan, Judy Van Kennan, Gail Schneider, Tom Miller, Sue Bellor, Wendy Chambers, Holly Derouchie, Miriam Catapano, Elizabeth Dow, Lenore Levine, Krista Colarusso-Martin, and Colleen Besaw. MMH appreciates each of these individuals for volunteering their time and giving back to the employees who work to serve patients and the community everyday. The Auxiliary also contributed to MMH Appreciation Day by offering a 20 percent discount at the Gift Shop to all employees and through their “Baked with Love” station set up outside the cafeteria.
Since the night shift staff members were unable to have donuts and coffee in the morning, the Foundation arranged for pizzas and salad to be delivered to the hospital in the evening. MMH is grateful to the Foundation, CSEA, and An Italian Affair for providing the pizzas. Popcorn cups and cotton candy were also left for the night shift in the employee lounges. To wrap up the Employee Appreciation Celebration, MMH offered Family Skate to employees and their families on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Massena Arena courtesy of A. Capionne, Inc. and Dale Kramer. All of these sponsors, volunteers and events truly made MMH’s Appreciation Day a success.
Julia Rose, MMH Foundation Director said the following about MMH’s Appreciation Day: “The event was more successful than we could have imagined with just days to prepare. The vibe in the hospital was positive and the energy was palpable. Employees were recognized for their outstanding care and customer service standards. We could have never pulled this event off without our partners: MMH Public Relations Team, Tarbell Management Group, Tim Horton’s, Heart to Heart Fitness, MMH Auxiliary, CSEA, Uniform Professionals, Frenchie’s Chevrolet, An Italian Affair, Bob and Cindy Elsner, A. Cappione, Dale Kramer and Sue Bellor.”
