Massena Memorial Hospital would like to announce that Richard Summermatter, MD, has joined the North Country Women’s Health staff. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Dr. Summermatter welcomes new moms and all women for their obstetrical and gynecological needs, but he also has extensive experience with laparoscopic surgery. Throughout his career, Summermatter has performed many paravaginal repairs, endometrial ablations, laparoscopic oophorectomies, laparoscopic presacral neurectomies, cystoscopies and hysteroscopies. He also specializes in infertility evaluation/treatment and works closely with fertility specialists to provide the best care to his patients.

Dr. Summermatter comes to MMH with many years of experience as an OB/GYN. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1980 and then completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine from 1980-1984. Since 1984, Summermatter has had a private practice and worked at various group practices, with his latest tenure at The Women’s Health Center at Springfield Hospital, Vermont.

In addition to having significant experience, Dr. Summermatter is committed to providing care to the underserved. Beginning in 2014, Summermatter travels annually to the Province of Zamboanga del Norte, Republic of the Philippines with one of his colleagues. Summermatter and his colleague perform major surgeries for women living in the Philippines to ensure that they receive much needed care. He plans to continue his medical mission and return to the Province of Zamboanga del Norte each year as long as his health allows him to do so.

Dr. Summermatter talked about why he chose MMH’s North Country Women’s Health and what skills he brings as an OB/GYN.

Why did you choose MMH and North Country Women’s Health?

Dr. Summermatter: “I was a student at Clarkson and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at this school. I really liked the location and all that it has to offer. There are great communities throughout St. Lawrence County and the people were always so nice. I also chose MMH because there seemed to be a need for providers who specialize in women’s health. I am glad that I am able to contribute to filling that need.”

Why should someone seeking care choose you?

Dr. Summermatter: “I come to MMH and North Country Women’s Health with many years of experience. I have had a private practice and worked at several group practices throughout my career. These opportunities allowed me to treat patients with diverse needs and expand my knowledge and skills as an OB/GYN. Furthermore, my patients are my priority. I am committed to providing high quality care to every patient.”

What is the most important thing to you in delivering patient care?

Dr. Summermatter: “The most important thing to me in delivering care is doing my absolute best to ensure that I provide quality care to every one of my patients. My patients deserve the highest quality care, and I strive to provide that.”

Dr. Summermatter joins Dr. Jeffrey Greenberg and Certified Nurse Midwife Barbara Hillis at North Country Women’s Health, 15 Hospital Drive, Massena. He welcomes new patients. To make an appointment or for more information, please call (315)769-4638.
