What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is a profession that makes use of a wide range of non-invasive interventions to reduce pain and restore function in individuals dealing with injury, disability or disease. Physical therapy treats disorders of the muscles, bones, or joints by means of physical agents, heat, light, water, manual and electronic massage, and exercise.

Who we are:
The Physical Therapy Department at Massena Memorial Hospital provides physical therapy services to both inpatients and outpatients. We work closely with you to regain control of your life and your mobility. We use a team approach with your physician, family members, and employers to ensure a speedy recovery. Treatments are generally performed by the same therapist at each session, allowing us to get to know YOU.
Our staff consists of 3 full time therapists, with a minimum of 5 years experience each. We also have 2 full time physical therapy assistants working closely with our patients.
Scheduling Physical Therapy: A physician's referral is necessary for all physical therapy services in New York State . Once your physician has prescribed physical therapy, he or she may contact us to set up an appointment. If your health care provider has not set up your appointment, contact us at 315-769-4336, and we will be happy to schedule you.
Inpatients at Massena Memorial Hospital may receive physical therapy 7 days/week, based on individual need.
We recognize that early intervention is essential in the rehabilitation process. Because of this we strive to schedule your evaluation within 72 hours.
What can I expect from my first appointment? When you first arrive for your physical therapy appointment, your physical therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation and design a treatment plan just for you. Your treatment plan will be explained to you. You should anticipate your first visit to be approximately 1 hour in length. Subsequent treatment visits average 30-45 minutes in length.
Please bring the following with you for your first appointment:
• Arrive 10 minutes early to fill out necessary paperwork.
• Please bring with you your physician's referral (or prescription for PT)
• A current list of your medications
• Insurance information
• Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.
Does my insurance cover physical therapy?
Massena Memorial Hospital Physical Therapy accepts most insurances, and we will submit your insurance claims for you. However, insurance policies differ, please consult your individual carrier for specific limitations, coverages and co-pays.
