“We need to encourage a culture of health care in which failure to treat tobacco use
-the chief cause of preventable death and disease
- constitutes an inappropriate standard of care.  If every physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, nurse...across America uses this tool, we would double quit rates, from one to  at least two million quitters each year.”  Michael Fiore, MD, Principal author, Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, 2008 Update.

Ask

“Do you smoke or use tobacco products?”

“When my doctor wants to know it must be important.”

Advise

“As your clinician, I need you to know that quitting smoking is the most important thing you can do to protect your health now and in the future.

“Every time my doctor tells me to quit, I get closer to doing it.”

Assess

“Are you willing to make a quit attempt at this time?”

"I’ll quit some day, don’t give up on me.”

Assist

“My office staff and I are here to   help you.  Ask your spouse/partner, friends, and co-workers to support you in your quit attempt.  Approved pharmacotherapy  increases smoking cessation success and reduce withdrawal symptoms.

“I don’t want to smoke, but I need help to stop.”

Arrange

“Please schedule a follow-up with the receptionist within the first week after your quit date.

“With follow-up support I know I can quit this time.”
