MMH Auxiliary Donates to Hospital to Purchase Bladder Scanner
The Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary donated $8,515 to Massena Memorial Hospital to purchase a patient bladder scanner for the hospital. The scanner will be used throughout the hospital in all patient care areas, from Medical/Surgical/Pediatric Unit, ICU, Maternity, and Emergency Department.
“We really appreciate the generosity of our hospital Auxiliary,” said Sue Beaulieu, RN, FACHE, explained. “The Verathon Bladder Scanner is a non-invasive instrument that measures the amount of urine in the bladder; this helps determine whether a patient needs to have a Foley catheter inserted. This will help decrease the number of patients needing a catheter. The benefits are increase of comfort for the patient and prevention of urinary tract infections for the patient because of catheters.

Each year the MMH Auxiliary offers fund raisers with the intent to purchase equipment for the hospital. In the past, the Auxiliary has donated money to purchase a Transvenous Pacemaker-Medtronic 5388 -- for the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. These pieces of equipment are used as a temporary pacemaker for a patient; a wire is passed through the vein into the heart to provide electrical stimulus for the heart to beat.
The Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary offers many opportunities to volunteer at the hospital at the Information Desk, Gift Shop and Beverage Cart. Additionally, the Auxiliary can be seen setting up Christmas Trees in the Cafeteria, Levine Outpatient Center, the Board Room, the front entrance and ICU & OB waiting rooms. The Auxilians also make headgear, pillows and blankets for Cancer patients, along with cloth bags for wheelchairs and walkers. The Auxiliary also give teddy bears to all the pediatric patients and new born. Over the last two years, a total of 692 teddy bears, 279 pillows, 54 bags and 12 hats have been given to the hospital for patients.
The Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary raises money with special projects throughout the year to purchase equipment or enhance patient care at the hospital. Anyone interested in offering a few hours of volunteer time can join the hospital Auxiliary at anytime. The Auxiliary has projects continuously throughout the year, and services within the hospital.
The Auxiliary aid in many volunteer efforts; such as the Information Desk, Gift Shop Patient Juice Cart, community health fairs and seminars, just to name a few. There are nearly 200 Auxiliary members who have baked, sewn, counted, poured, carried smiled, directed, sold, informed and most of all given of themselves countless hours to help others and the hospital.
